The animation

The animation runs with 3 second intervals between changes, and runs five times. You can re-run the animation by using the History files in your browser, or by refreshing the page.

The reaction

The reaction chosen is that between chloromethane and hydroxide ions in predominantly aqueous solution:

CH₃Cl + OH^- à CH₃OH + Cl^-

Chloromethane is a gas so this reaction has to be done in a sealed vessel.
